they call a trunking scanner “digital”, but it is still receiving conventional FM in a trunk group.

Digital is protected under the Communications Privacy Act. Digital is encrypted and it is against the law to decode encrypted communications.

It’s illegal to use a police scanner unless you’re in Law enforcement anywhere. Radar detectors are legal but that’s a different story.

I bought a book from Radio Shack a LONG time ago and it had the freqs for everything around me. Or just call who you want to listen to and ask them, it’s not confidential. I know people have called my local police department and asked, and they were given the freqs.

If still no luck, try searching for a group or club in your area that have scanners and contact them.

Not everything is free. Go to Radio Shack, and buy a frequency/scanner book for the whole region.

You may need to upgrade your scanner. Check and see if your local area is using 800MHz trunked radio systems. If so, check to see if their system has been re-banded or they are using digital trunked radio system. You can find more info and frequencies @ http://www.radioreference.com

It depends on the state and its laws regarding use of a scanner.You may listen but you are not allowed to repeat the information to a party that is not an active listener.You are not allowed to interfere with any police action,or interfere with law enforcement. See state and local laws regarding the use of portable scanners.I think that trooper 3316 may have a better answer. He has some great answers.
